Along the journey from childhood to adulthood we lose the childlike wonder we viewed the world through. From time to time, we all wish we could go back to those problem free childhood summers, without a care in the world. This summer, we plan to do just that in our summer sermon series, Faith Like a Child. Join us as we look at a few of the songs we may have learned as children in Sunday School. These songs, while simple, hold profound theological truths. Let’s explore some of these simple, yet profound truths.

David and Goliath. The story of the underdog facing the giant and bringing him down. The story of the one who pulled the upset. The story of the one who defied the odds against him and found victory for his people. Those things are what we often think about when we think of David and Goliath. However, are those things really what the story of David and Goliath is about? Today, we are going to pose that question, and see if we have labeled this story all wrong.

We are in God’s army. It is God’s army—not ours. It is God’s church---not ours. He is in charge—we aren’t. He gets to set the agenda---we don’t. Our message today will help us understand this. As good soldiers of the cross, let’s listen to what our Commander-In- Chief has to say to us this day.

Jesus points out in our passage this morning that we must make sure that we are building our lives on a firm foundation. If we aren't, then when the storms of life hit, we won't be able to withstand the problems that come our way. Let's see if we can learn exactly what Jesus means by this parable.

In His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus called us the light of the world. How often do you think about light? Probably not too often. Sure, we notice when it is missing, but thanks to our technology, that isn’t a such a big deal. We simply walk over to the wall, flip a switch, and our light problems are solved. As second nature to us as light is, it is still important. Light has the power to change everything. Today, we will unpack what it means to be the light of the world as we cover our next children’s song This Little Light of Mine.

One Nation Under God. We say these words when we recite the Pledge of Allegiance as an expression to the flag of the United States and to our great republic. On our money, we print the words, In God We Trust. These two phrases reinforcing our national reliance on God has drawn criticism over the years from those who reject the existence of God. So, how do we, as God believing and God-fearing Christians, respond? We respond by daily reminding ourselves of our dependence on God and praying for His leadership.

The words etched in the Bible tell the story of God’s love for us. They tell the story of the Savior who came to die so that we might have life. But, they also warn of the danger of trying to deceive God and His Spirit. In today’s edition of Faith Like a Child, we turn to the shocking story of Ananias and Sapphira, who thought they could lie to God and win the praise of men. We will learn from their disastrous experience that what God wants is genuine commitment from His children.

Happy Father’s Day! As we think about our Father’s and the love they have showed us through the years, we also remember our Heavenly Father and the love He shows us. His love is immeasurable. His love is deep and wide. His love flows like a fountain. Today, as we honor our fathers, we will use the children’s song Deep and Wide, to help us understand how deep and wide God’s love for us is.

In 1957, English singer Laurie London, made popular the American spiritual, He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands. Since that time, this song has been recorded by many gospel singers, and sung by thousands of Sunday School classes and church camp groups. While it is a popular song we teach our children, how often do we think about the theological depth these lyrics communicate? This morning, we will unpack deeper what it means for God to have the whole world in His hands.
