“I can’t go to church! I don’t have the right clothes. I don’t know what to say. I don’t look like anyone there. I have too much sin in my life, and if I walk into a church, it will burn down.” These, and phrases like them, are hurdles that prevent people from hearing the love of God. Today, we will me a woman who had plenty of hurdles in her path, and despite them all, has become a model of faith for all Christians.

Back to School. These three words speak volumes. To moms and dads, it is a welcomed return to a normal schedule. To children, it is a return to teachers, and recess, and homework. To teachers, it is a return to teaching, and discipline, and grading papers. To the rest of us, it is yellow buses, 20 mph speed limit zones, and the beginning of fall. Today, we want to acknowledge another school year and pray for those going back to school.

Last week we looked at how my relationship with God should transform our lives concerning our past, present and future. Today we focus on the present, upon the church and how my relationship with the church should affect me and how important that is.

Since God is working on and in all of us to develop our character, today we ask the question, “How should my relationship with God affect me?” Using the example of Abraham, let’s answer this question. Next week we will look at this from a New Testament perspective as we consider part two of our question, “How should my relationship with God affect me?”
